Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Student progress is measured using a variety of methods and tools. Classroom teachers keep detailed records and report regularly to parents. Assessment and evaluation for learning is an ongoing process, which enables teachers to diagnose individual needs and plan programs accordingly. Grade 3 and 6 students participate in the Ministry EQAO testing in May.

One of the main goals of the school is to develop student confidence by building on success. This is not limited to academics but also includes student participation in STEAM activities during class and recess. Our extracurricular program is designed to provide many opportunities for children to learn new skills and expand their horizons.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Our School Improvement Plan recognizes the individual needs of our students. Our overall goals are to focus on learning and activities that promote literacy and numeracy. Developing positive self-esteem in our students and involving the whole community feature prominently in our School Improvement Plan.

Our Literacy Initiatives include:

  • Explicit Language Instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, vocabulary development, reading fluency, comprehension and writing)
  • Reading Buddies and Home Reading Program: class-specific
  • Early Literacy Program (after-school parent and child program)
  • Orkidstra Music Program (Grade 1-2) 
  • Math and Literacy Tutoring Programs
  • Start2Finish Running and Reading Club (after school one day a week)
  • Spelling Bee (lunch and recess)

Numeracy

  • Use of Math journals and Math software
  • School-wide focus on Number Talks and highlighting math in everyday life
  • Integration of math language into the general curriculum
  • Math games
  • Use of Balanced Math Approach: All grades
  • Focus on problem-solving in mathematics

Student Self-esteem and Community Involvement

  • Boys and Girls Club Partnership (after-school program)
  • CGI Annual School-Wide Breakfast and Barbecue
  • Community Education Liaison through S.A.T.E. Initiative
  • Crossroads Student Support Program
  • Cultural presentations and groups led by members of the OCDSB Indigenous Team,
  • Inuuqatigiit (Closing the Gap) and Wabano.
